Think of how much humanity has simply forgotten over time. At multiple points in human history the "lower class" was not allowed to learn to read or write. In the modern era in America the illiteracy rate in "youth" is going through the roof (for various reasons).
If you can't write down, or rather, learn from what others have done before you then you have to re-invent everything all over again.

Great resets have been done again and again. Think of how many libraries have been burned down or research how many cities burned at the same time throughout history. The elite who have been in charge for millennia have always controlled information and our history. Writing only lasts if it's on stone.
