I remember reading about refrigerator sized electrolysis machines. They had working prototypes and they could work completely off of solar power. And they cost about $15K each (and the inventors had hoped the mass-production would help reduce the cost). It would allow you to be completely off the grid because the machine produced hydrogen and oxygen which were then in turn used to make electricity (via the new fuel). It would allow every single house to be completely off the grid and be their own miniature power plant.
This tech was installed along the highway in Iceland.

Why don't we have electrolysis machines installed in every middle class house? This was 10 years ago. Should be ready.
