One of the first things I teach students on the first day of energy policy classes I have taught is how energy density works, and how a battery is a device to store energy at high densities. But at a certain point, when you increase the energy density enough, we don’t call it a battery any more. We call it a bomb.

It's the way these batteries are made. I bought one for a GPS device I use on my bicycle. It's a plastic bag filled with chemicals. If it is over-charged, the plastic bag swells and may rupture. Exposure to air can ignite the contents. I don't have an electric bicycle, so I haven't seen its batteries, but I bet their construction is basically the same. It's just more cheap Chinese junk thrust on us because they can get away with it. Nothing works in China, because the Chinese are incompetent and corrupt.
