For over 75 years, automobile manufacturers where overwhelmingly dominated by mechanical engineers bending steel. In the past 20ish years however there has been a gargantuan change in the industry, where software engineers and electrical engineers are now co-equal voices in vehicle design. I agree with you that I won't willingly give up my internal combustion engine and steering wheel anytime soon. But indeed, times are a-changin'
