I was thinking more along the lines of shooting through the window to break it, while aiming at the head of the sleeping occupant, then grabbing their phones and laptops.

Also a high chance of happening. It depends if they want to steal or if they just want to murder. I guess they usually do one before the other when possible. So they probably would shoot them, take their shit, pour the gas in hoping it will cover anything up and light it while they run away.
