If there is another strain of Covid, is is very likely even less harmful than the Omicron strain, which affects most people in the same way as the common cold. Nobody needs protection from it.

You're absolutely right - but, the fearmongering talking heads will screech about it and the sheep will lay down and be slaughtered.
That would be the way of things, except that they rolled out a leaky vaccine in the midst of a pandemic. This alters the evolutionary terrain in potentially unexpected ways. It's likely that the virus will become less lethal over time, but the jabs throw a spanner in the otherwise fairly predictable process.
There's also no guarantee that they aren't working on new variants in labs around the world. The Omicron strain has a very different lineage than the Delta.... like they were developed in separate labs from the "wild" strain. They are probably working no new strains by using serial passage through animals like ferrets or mice engineered to have human ACE2 receptors. If they could develop a strain that has a >0.2 CFR, they would probably be able to create a renewed and even deeper global panic. It's all about fear, and using fear to gain control over people.
