“I think this was blown out of proportion myself,” said Edward Bligh, a telephone company spokesman. “People in the company think that was the case, >too. Our hiring requirements have never changed. Skin color has always been irrelevant.”

However, a veteran telephone company worker in Babylon, L. I., disagreed. “We do have fewer customer complaints out here,” she said, referring to her >tenure prior to 1970 in a bureau in New York City.

Herbert Hill, national labor director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said today that “the N.A.A.C.P. has received complaints that black and other nonwhite workers were being phased out of the directory assistance operations, and our own investigations confirmed this to be true.”
