Stupid school made me read that in English class, and didn't even tell anyone it was a fictional story, so everyone thought it was real.
My old man told me it was bullshit in middle school. I never said anything then but told my kids the same thing my dad said to me "read it...pass the test...forget it because it is total fiction".
Same thing in Russia, they made us sing songs written by jews larping as Russians about gorillion burnt villages and children by teh ebul yahtzees every year. Already back then I had a gut feeling that this entire thing was overblown out of proportion and it was a total bs.
Lot of "college" level English courses had that on their schedule. We had to read that, and "A Tale of Two Cities."
Literature is fine, but that had to be one of the driest books I've ever read, and I've got a lot of theoretical electronics books on my shelf.
