The owner used to be active on sites like voat/poal. He even reached out, to whom he thought was the owner of pic8, to complain about it. This was years ago. Awhile back, catbox went down without explanation for a couple days. Everyone though it was gone for good, until it came back with zero explanation. I haven't heard from, nor seen the prior owner anywhere online.
Add to it that catbox has a 500MB (last I checked) upload limit which is extremely costly to run, even if you delete the content after 1 year (which catbox does, btw). Not to mention the weird loli shit on the frontpage of catbox.
The whole thing glows to me. After catbox went down for days, then came back without explanation, I have never used it again. Also note, since that happened, as far as I'm aware, catbox has never gone down. Not even due to an ssl cert expiration or some other common issue. Doesn't seem like a rando is running it anymore.
