Once or twice a year I get this crazy idea to go there. It's an extremely disappointing experience every time and I question how I was able to not just eat, but enjoy this stuff in my teens.
Was in Tucson area last week - self proclaimed Mexican food capital of the US. Searched Google Maps for "killer street tacos". Dozens of places popped up - including every Taco Bell in town. Where all the real Mexican restaurants and taquerias had ratings (mostly) well over 4, the Taco Bells hovered around 4 +/-.
How they can stay open in that market and maintain that high of a rating is a mystery to me, because you can get good street tacos all over the place for cheap. Maybe not at midnight though...
Same reason that Jack In The Box tacos have been on the menu since the 90s. It's not about authentic. Sometimes you just wanna scratch that itch of a flavor. Similar to White Castle. Not a great burger, but a flavor that some people just feel is comfort food
...particularly with a goodly quantity of alcohol in their bellies.
Weed is a bigger driver for them, in my experience. I will admit though that those Jack tacos with some poppers or egg rolls are a guilty pleasure of mine
