When Turks conquered Cyprus in 1570, they immediately enslaved white young women and men to send to sultan's harem. Maria Sygklitiki decided to deny this fate and on Oct 6, 1570, she blew up the Turkish flagship along two other ships as it was ready to sail from the harbor of Famagusta.

Reminds me of the German women (Cimbri, I think) that committed suicide/infanticide rather than being captured by the Romans.
