I've mentioned it on the site before, but only in passing. History doesn't tell us, and all we have is the mythology.
Strings have been made out of many materials. There's a wonderful book, Handbook of Materials for String Musical Instruments by Voichita Bucur. It's a scholarly approach and it's really too expensive for me to recommend buying. It's like $300.
