Oh man, that is so true. After years of playing the drums my left ear is shot. On top of the tinnitus in both ears I have significantly-reduced hearing. Custom ear plugs are well worth the investment.

So few actually protect their hearing. To not do so is just foolhardy. We depend on our hearing and we only get one set of ears.

We push about 24,000 watts at people, if we're outside. We can go quite a bit louder, but that's adequate. We've got spare stacks and can toss 'em in.

Yeah, you can get a 'sound level meter' for your cell phone - for free. Using that, you can see what the dB rating is and then see how long you can be exposed to it before it causes hearing loss.

They aren't 100% accurate, but they're close enough. We have a fancy one at the booth. They're not expensive, but most folks don't really have a call for one and probably aren't going to buy one. But, most folks seem to have a cell phone and that will do the job well enough for most applications.
