the history channel had a 2 hour special on this back when they did actual history. its a bit fuzzy but from what i remember:
Knights templar recruited vikings to ferry them across the sea and mediate their disputes with the natives. With peace established, they set out from the Hudson bay down through Minnesota and placed the runestone between 2 great rivers. Back in this time, when a land claim was placed near a river, it extended down to whatever the river touched and a number of miled away from either bank of both rivers. back then there was a river that ran north into the Hudson, and the 2nd river ran into the Mississippi. but the templars brought with them the same problem sweeping Europe, the plague. most of their settlers, templar, Vikings and natives alike were killed in huge droves from this disease leaving the populations in greatly reduced numbers before the colonists of 1492 arrived and depleted the native numbers by 90% a second time. The problem for the templar and vikings was that the disease was 100% lethal to them.
There are several stone structures along the east coast that have long sat abandoned which line up with stars significant to both the vikings and templar.
Their whole point of founding a country on this new world? to breed a people with the truth of christ and how god was a woman, using the undeciphered Egyptian icons of isis, wife of osiris and deciphered egypt records of RA being the one true god. their play was to use the word of god to grow a country to rival the pope, and claim righteous vengeance for their wrongful banishment and excommunication from rome. if not for the plague, they would have had a 200 year head start along with sharing their knowledge of alchemy, stonework, metallurgy, and claims of starting to teach native children to read latin and viking runes. if the natives could be unified under the templars through christ, it represents a force this world has never seen who had a chance to stand against europe and their colonization of the western hemisphere.
