A similar history of attrocities took place in Greece when the communists formed armed gangs in order to seize power after the departure of the German army. The massacres lasted from around 1942-43 to 1948-49, but Jews couldn't participate because Germans had gathered them in time.
The difference with Latvia is that in Greece it's virtually prohibited to talk about the crimes of the communists, and the communists have even succeeded in being recognized as "antifascist heroes". Today, you will hear communists glorifying the massacres and even openly declare that they should repeat them, and there are no legal consequences for this.
