It seems to be drawn entirely from French classical artists, particularly David, painting Romans saluting in this way in the 18th century that has led to this widely held misconception. And it was another French artist, Gerome, who gave the world the misconception that thumbs down signalled the death of gladiator, when in fact the opposite was true.
