It was worse than a lie. Kuwait was pumping oil from an oil field that belonged to Iraq. Iraq came to the US ambassador and asked if the US would mind if they invaded Kuwait. The US ambassador told Sadam the US didn't give a shit, so he did. THe Kuwaitis hired a jew PR firm to make up stories about Iraqi troops executing children in Kuwaiti hospitals, etc. and the war was on.
