Always fascinating to me. Even full plate armor wasn't truly refined until the 14th century. Before then, the extent of protection was mostly a mail hauberk over padded clothing. By the time we reached the traditional "knights in shining armor" look in the 1500s, gunpowder was already upheaving the entire notion of warfare.
