Europe's official population records show a decrease of one million European Jews from before WWII to after WWII. Just about all of them went to either the US or Israel. There is no census support for the "six million". The figure OP presented shows supports the official European census figures (available online, it's been years since I looked them up).

My all time favorite is to do a historical newspaper search of "6,000,000" or even more specifically "6,000,000 jews". The results are very surprising if you have not done it before.
