The imagery of the two men following Bill around, though, is legitimate, and a major theme of *Eyes Wide Shut* (and most of Kubrick’s work) is a criticism of pedophilia and child exploitation. From the models overdosing, to the ball, to the various scenes involving their Alice “grooming” their daughter. Additionally, the film has strong ties to *The Nutcracker*, a story about a young girl entering a strange dreamworld where she encounters horrific imagery that blurs the line between the real and the dream world, and includes certain elements about her and the nutcracker having some sort of romantic involvement. The names Alice and Helena also have connotations, with Alice tying back to Alice Liddell of Alice in Wonderland itself another story about a young girl in a dream world, but with the real world rumors about Lewis Carroll having an inappropriate relationship. Helena, yet another character with a name associated with a dream world - A Midsummer Night’s Dream - is a girl whose parents have given her away to a cruel man who mistreats her, yet who loves him anyway.
