I agree with your assessment, but they're also not wrong. In the Linux sphere at least, nothing really gains a solid foothold until it's adopted by large distros. SystemD is a perfect example. There were alternatives. There were other ways. But once Fedora and Debian got involved, it because the facto. I'm not saying this is a good or bad thing because there's arguments to be made on both sides of this, but it is a truth that Linux only grows and evolves when the big names MAKE it evolve and grow.
