So what's the story, I thought Linux was basically virus-free?

There are still viruses for Linux. This was a frontend for ClamAV, which scans for more than just Linux stuff.

There are no "viruses" for Linux. Worms perhaps, but the discipline of the FSHS is antithetical to viruses.

ClamAV, a virus scanner "for Linux," is more correctly referred to as "a virus scanner on Linux." It's purpose is to scan transient files when Linux is used as a mail server. These files are email messages destined for computers of other operating systems and which may contain embedded viruses targeting those operating systems.

Linux is immune to the typical virus but vulnerable to the typical administrator.

I immediately thought of , and that was also mentioned in the article. It was marked as unmaintained a year ago.

I wonder how hard it would be to write an extension for Nautilus or Nemo that lets you right click and scan a file?

It could simply run the command line tool (clamav) and leave the terminal open so you can see the output.

I'm surprised it's not already built in.

But then again, most attack vectors these days seem to be via online services, a good adblocker, some scriptblocking, and a competent email gateway can solve many of your issues.
