Commies have no sense of humor whatsoever.

Edit, an example:

Preferirei essere negro piuttosto che gay, perche' se sei negro non lo devi dire a tua madre! I'd rather be black than gay, because if you're black, you don't have to tell your mother! -- Charles Pierce

From the post:

Package maintainers note that these packages have existed since 2003, with zero complaints from users. Maintainers also noted that it is impossible to see the “offensive” quotes accidentally (as it requires installing a non-default package and issuing a command line flag).

Just the same, the Debian team has determined that this is a “Serious” issue and that Debian 13 cannot ship (which is scheduled for August 9th, 5 days from now) until these “offensive” quote packages are removed.

“With my Release Team hat on I'm reinforcing the decision of the community team that the offensive flavors of fortune packages don't have a place in Debian anymore.”

A few other choice quotes from the Debian team:

“Sexism, racism and such are not, never were, and can not be funny.”

“Making fun of cis-het white males can be offensive, and it’s OK, while making fun of people already suffering from discrimination is oppressive, and that’s not OK)”

“There is no such thing, in our current society, as anti-white racism or anti-male sexism.”

Gay. Why is everyone trying to take all of the fun out of OSS? Fucking corporate goons and DEI cunts.

If memory serces, Debian has always been stodgy and anti-fun.

To get an idea of how ridiculous this is, even if you have installed one of the offensive fortunes packages you still won’t see those fortunes unless you add one of two options when you run the command. Offensive fortunes are installed in a subdirectory to separate them from the rest.

In the man page, beside the option to see offensive fortunes only it says this:

Please, please, please request a potentially offensive fortune if and only if you believe, deep in your heart, that you are willing to be offended. (And that you'll just quit using -o rather than give us grief about it, okay?)

Had to look...

Fortune and phosphor were my fave screensaver components on our first Linux server at work. Good times.

I somehow missed phosphor. I guess it was buried in the xscreensaver extras (still is) and desktop environments stopped using those long ago.

Just installed those on my Ubuntu 24.04 and everything still works under an X session. Didn't configure it to auto start but it's good enough for a quick trip down memory lane.

These quotes are hilariously kosher salty.

Sexism, racism and such are not, never were, and can not be funny.

That's gay.

!

I've run a few and most are just risque.

You can't even get these unless you install fortunes-off and use the -a or -o options. I doubt most know that these, among others like mario and debian-bofh-excuses even exist.

I'm so glad I switched to Arch.
