Truth. Live in a rural town in south east TX. Feb 2021 went for 3 days of no power while temp never got above 20F. No water for 8 days due to frozen, busted water mains. 100s of homes were damaged and without water for weeks from broken internal water pipes and not enough plumbers to get them repaired quickly.
Bought a 'job-site' generator to power the house for the next event. But had to wait over 2 months get a transfer switch that was back-ordered.
Got a quote from the local back up standby, automatic switch over generator place for our 1200sqft house - $14000. Uh, no.
What they don't talk about with solar is that after the cost of the panels, controllers, and inverters the cost of batteries more than doubles the cost. And have a 7-10 year life before needing to be replaced. It might make sense if you were building a new, remote area off-grid home.
But I can buy alot of LPG or gas for my $600 generator that MAY get used a couple of days a year. Plus I can throw it in the pickup and use it when we take our trailer camping.
