why the fuck would you use an app to unlock and start your car?
Because that's what their owners want.
I work new build construction deficiencies for residential. Some ovens now have internet and an app, so you can preheat the oven on your way home.
Think about that for a second. You are saving either 10 mins or so of heat up time at best.
Or
You a dumbest who left uncooked food in the oven all day to fester, then burn in a preheating oven.
The scam is that everyone wants their tentacles in your phone/computer and comes up with a bs reason to encourage you to help them out with that. Some headphones won't pair to your phone unless you give them access to location services AND keep it on...
subaru started putting remote start in their cars by default, for the low price of $15 a month or so you can use their app to remotely start your car.
making your broke through subscriptions
I remember when such features were just part of the remote that came with the car and didn't have subscription charges.
Remote start that operates through the internet is a terrible idea, you're telling the app to send a command to the LTE modem in the car that then sends the command to the CANBUS, if the remote start service ever gets exploited, you can bet your ass the hackers will figure out how to send CAN commands beyond just turning the ignition on, nothing in the CANBUS protocol allows for restricting access to specific equipment.
Even if it works flawlessly, what if you lose your phone? I can see the argument for having a key and an app, if your phone is sufficiently secure (although I suppose you can lose your keys just as well), but why would you leave yourself one way to start?
