They were children. I know a person who grew up a literal youth member of his national communist uniparty. He got a good start in life thanks to that, got a good education, got the full commie indoc as well as the promised cake government job. He was set for life but realized there's more to the world and decided not to keep falling in line, fell out of favor, and was eventually (somewhat mutually) kicked out of the party.
