The trusses were rusted out and the undercarriage was held in place with guy wires prior to this. What you should be asking is where all the budget for infrastructure maintenance has gone under Peduto. They don't even plow the roads until well after they are fully covered. The roads I was there 2 days after that big snow about 2 weeks ago and some of the residential roads were still covered with snow icing over. They don't pretreat the major roads and don't plow the residential streets. Where is all the money going???

This didn't sneak up on us. That beam was completely rusted through - gone - three years ago. That didn't happen overnight. That bridge has been neglected for at least a decade, probably longer.

I looked up the database where they keep track of structurally deficient bridges. That particular bridge was listed in "poor" condition - "Intolerable requiring high priority of corrective action" for the last 11 years.
For 11 years they have known that it was a problem and it was neglected and not fixed. This isn't a problem with that particular bridge. This is a systemic problem with our entire infrastructure. Bridges don't just collapse. They are neglected or damaged, not fixed, then they collapse.
