I wonder what the logic was in giving the amphorae tiny bases, so they cannot be stood up vertically? I'm guessing those who used them just have wanted them resting on their sides, for some reason. Maybe sediment buildup? Or maybe to keep their corks moist, as they must do with wine bottles?

The pointed bottoms allowed a heavy amphora to be dragged. They allowed the ship to fit more in the cargo hold by placing the point between the necks, reducing the empty space. The tight fit helped prevent the shifting of cargo in rolling seas.

I think it's so you had no choice but to put the milk back in the fridge when you were done pouring. Fridges back then were outfitted with holes to hold these things upright.
