What does this mean?

‘Entanglement’ is when paired photons are separated and (no matter the distance) behave as if still connected/paired. ‘Hidden variables’ is an attempt to explain this very strange phenomenon without referring to consciousness.

"locally real": “Objects have definite properties independent of observation.” that is, independent of consciousness. Most scientists/physicists are materialist and hold matter to be primary and consciousness to be secondary i.e. consciousness only comes about as a mere epi-phenomenon or by-product of a complex material system (the brain).

"not locally real" / "the heart of reality": The experiments they speak of in this article, deny Hidden Variables and further prove the correctness of quantum physics that consciousness is indeed primary and it is matter, that is a product of consciousness

“The doctrine that the world is made up of objects whose existence is independent of human consciousness turns out to be in conflict with quantum mechanics and with facts established by experiment." -Bernard d'Espagnat

“I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness. We cannot get behind consciousness. Everything that we talk about, everything that we regard as existing, postulates consciousness.” Max Planck

Einstein, for one, hated this idea and fought against it for 10 years I can't accept quantum mechanics because "I like to think the moon is there even if I am not looking at it", but eventually accepted the error was his.

Consciousness is a big problem for physics because it makes us part of that which we are trying to ‘objectively’ measure. As Max Plank said “Science cannot solve the ultimate mystery of nature. And that is because, in the last analysis, we ourselves are part of nature and therefore part of the mystery that we are trying to solve.”

Except for the rare exception of Zeilinger and his ilk, “strong prejudices” (against consciousness as primary) persist to this day. It would seem to be as Goethe observed “Ignorant men raise questions that wise men answered a thousand years ago.”

‘The multiplicity is only apparent . . . The mystical experience of the union with God regularly leads to this view, unless strong prejudices stand in the West.’ -Erwin Schrodinger

"The atoms or elementary particles themselves are not real; they form a world of potentialities or possibilities rather than one of things or facts." Werner Heisenberg

"Observations not only disturb what is to be measured, they produce it." Pascual Jordan

"When the province of physical theory was extended to encompass microscopic phenomena through the creation of quantum mechanics, the concept of consciousness came to the fore again. It was not possible to formulate the laws of quantum mechanics in a fully consistent way without reference to the consciousness." Eugene Wigner

"In the beginning there were only probabilities. The universe could only come into existence if someone observed it. It does not matter that the observers turned up several billion years later. The universe exists because we are aware of it." Martin Rees

I took a collegiate level intro to physics class and I have no idea either. I mean i kinda do but also feel like i don't really grasp the subject matter.
