Slavery was going to be outlawed in the newly formed States outside the thirteen. They didn't want the slaves to run away to the free States. Slavery started with poor White Europeans, then Irish Child slave labor, and when it was not cheap enough they got negros.

You also had Westward expansion upsetting the balance in the senate, Every state that would come online along the Mason Dixon could sway the balance. Kansas was embroiled in guerilla war for a decade or more before the civil war (see 'Bleeding Kansas'). The powder keg was always there but Westward expansion lit the fuse.

You also have the whole states rights angle, not much of a republic when the feds have sided with Northern money to impose their will on you.

Growing up in the North they like to paint the union as righteous liberators and the confederacy as evil backwards slave drivers. I always had a fascination with the war though and you learn real quick that the situation was not so cut and dry. The North was conscripting Irishmen and shit straight off the boat to hurl at the Southerners, they had incompetent generals for years before finding guys like Sherman (who was ruthless as all hell) and they fought with industrial power and money the way the country fights its corrupt foreign wars now. By contrast the Southern leadership was desperate, brilliant, determined and their soldiers were fighting for their freedom and endured incredible hardship, Grant was a politician but Lee was a folk hero. The southerners had everything on the line, just like we all did in 1776. They didn't want DC, they wanted to make their own country in their own home states, in terms of territory it truly was a war of Northern aggression.

Eventually I developed a neutral disposition, you can't go to Gettysburg and not feel the weight of the sacrifice the Confederates made and the honor they had. Nobody is allowed to hold a nuanced view like that anymore though, even Southerners are afraid to wave the flag these days. There is no nuance in the year 2020, everyone with open eyes can see that niggers are our unmaking and that compromise with the feds is just another name for defeat. That trusting in the process is like trusting a carnie at the circus. The constitution died on a farm field in Gettysburg in 1865.
