The Talmudic position is that those in pain are the true experts as to the extent of their suffering and know the means to relieve it.
This one takes it to a different level. I don't care which big book'o folklore it came from, that statement is almost objectively wrong. Ask a severely depressed person how to fix their suffering and they'll say death. A drug addict will ask for drugs, someone with cancer or tuberculosis will probably have no fucking idea and a schizophrenic may well ask for dead cats or dick pics. There are maybe five scenarios where this stupid saying will hold true of adults and it's literally never true of children. I can only assume the rabbi who wrote that never met any kids, which is probably for the best.
