A former employer went under and I'm helping clean out some of the garbage. This, along with a number of other interesting items, was in a drawer. It's a high purity (for 1973) N-doped (Arsenic) Germanium semiconductor crystal.
I'm not sure what the old man was doing, but by the other materials in with this item, it probably had something to do with gamma radiation detection.
I have no real use for this item, it's just a cool piece of technology.
