Should writers be compensated for the use of their work in training language models?
No. Communicating ideas is not a commodity. Being a writer can be a job if being paid to write. But repurposing published works should not be subject to royalties any more than an artist creating a derivative work from prior art. Plagiarism is a very different thing.
