I understand it was almost completely his baby as First Lord of the Admiralty. I never understood why everyone jerks off over Churchill as a hero. He seems like a total scumbag once you get past the headlines and propaganda. He was also responsible for the sinking of the Lusitania and the attack at Mers-el-Kébir against his French allies in WWII. He would fit right in with today's modern "democratic" politicians.
