One the other hand, Italy gives the citizenship to anyone you can prove to have an Italian ancestor, no matter how far in the past (as long as it's from the paternal line). Tons of people in Latin America get the Italian citizenship this way.

I grew up in an Italian neighbourhood and would get that question constantly. "Canadian" was not an approved answer despite being able to trace 7 generations here before their arrival in Virginia. Italians take family history seriously.

Good. There should be no citizenship granted to anyone except in their birth country.
