one of my favorite historical ancedotes... they were really into using urine and blood to determine which one of the humors were out of balance, by tasting.. or applying leeches. oh, he has a gash in his forehead... better extract more blood

I think leeching/bloodletting gets a bad reputation. Without anti-inflammatory drugs there's no real way to reduce swelling other than via bloodletting and could often be the difference between life and death.

'Doctor' originally referred exclusively to what we would call a PhD today. There was a concerted effort in early modern times by physicians to apply the 'Doctor' label to themselves so as to associate themselves with learning and give themselves an air of legitimacy.

For some reason, this reminds me of a web banner I made for a man who was a plastic surgeon and extremely proud of the fact he had been a butcher for many years before going into plastic surgery. I was wondering if he would like a meat cleaver graphic that morphed into a surgeon's scalpel.

The barber pole has a twofold tradition: The red-and-white stripes represent bloody bandages, and generally there is a caduceus incorporated into the barber pole, due to the surgical nature of their tradition.
