I had this realization a couple years ago. A few factors played into it; mostly my love for the outdoors, and wanting to put myself in a position to enjoy long backpacking trips. Soon my stuff will no longer own me and I'll be able to quit my "good job". Sure I'll have to work at times, but not as a wage slave to keep chasing the next shiny purchase.
