Every virus does that: The variants that keep the spreading hosts longer alive are more successful than the competition. In the end of the evolution, viruses just live with humans and nobody cares. Omicron did a step into that direction by switching from infecting the deep parts of the lungs (where it ancestors killed the host) to infecting the bronchia (from where it can better spread).
