A major thing people are not taking into account with the "green" alternatives is that they are not predictable power generation. Sometimes they generate more sometimes its less. There will need to be MASSIVE battery banks to "smooth out" the distribution and none of our modern grid's are designed for this.

From the post: "In Los Angeles, where I live, the rites of autumn can feel alien. Endless blue skies and afternoon highs near 90 degrees linger long after Griffith Park opens its Haunted Hayride. When the highs dip toward more seasonably appropriate numbers, they’ll be accompanied by one of California’s unfortunate traditions: wasted clean energy."

I solved this problem myself use my own off grid solution. I didn't want a grid tied system. The problem with off grid is there are no installers. They all want to do grid tie.

Yeah. I don't understand why anyone would put up a solar system without having a battery to run off of and if you are tied to the grid an ATS so you can either feed back into the gird if you already are topped off or to pull from it if the panels are not getting light because of snow/clouds/etc.
