The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has confirmed that radioactive material was lost in transit earlier this month, heightening fears about public safety and sparking theories about mysterious drone activity in New Jersey.

Officer Lew, a prominent political commentator, highlighted the NRC’s event report during a review of regulatory alerts.

“While looking at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission Alerts. I can confirm that there is radioactive material that has gone missing on Dec 2nd, 2024 out of New Jersey. This might be the reason for the drones… just speculation at this point,” he wrote.

The missing material, identified as a Ge-68 pin source manufactured by Eckert & Ziegler, was reported lost by its licensee on December 3, 2024. Shipped for disposal, the container arrived at its destination severely damaged and empty. . .

That's a small radioactive source used in industrial applications. It doesn't pose too much danger unless you are in very close or direct contact with it and the safety aperture is open.

You would be surprised as to the number of small gamma, beta and X-ray sources go missing each year. It's been like this for many decades. Industrial and medical sources are very poorly managed and end up derelict way too often. They sometimes cause big problems though. I used to work with a gamma cell in the mid-1990s, cobalt-60 source. I wrote a small software package for the technicians running it to determine source decay since last calibration and adjusted exposure times for their radhard device test and characterization process.

Yeah, I wouldn't ever want to be on the wrong side of that aperture!

It seems, if this is the reason for the drones, that there has not been a frantic search of this scope ever. I think they used to use tractor trailer trucks with equipment in the trailer to search out radioactive sources in the past. I question whether this event is more dangerous than they say, i.e. they claim a small source is missing (in order to avoid public panic) whereas they are actually looking for a much larger source. So much misinfo these days, hard to know what or which parts to believe.

The FAA isn't rerouting air traffic or freaking out over airspace incursions. That tells me they are 100% being told to allow the drone traffic and to not deviate from flight plans. This isn't a simple matter of some lost radioactive source. This is preparation for something big.

"Less than Cat 3" sources get lost all the time, this is a nothingburger.

Maybe, if they are being honest. I do think they are sniffing for a radioactive source but is it really just a minor source that "gets lost all the time" or something much bigger? They can describe it as a minor source to keep the public from panicking ... in order to explain the drone swarms to the public.

Germanium-68 decays via electron capture to Gallium-68, which in turn decays via beta decay. You're not going to detect a weak beta source from 500+ ft up.

The "sniffing for a dirty bomb" theory does have some value, because you CAN detect high-energy gammas from up there, AND the gammas' individual energies can be measured, giving a fingerprint of the isotope. But this lost medical source is FUD.
