I’m reminded about the times in history when Russia has been underestimated.

While I have no doubt that Russia has absolutely no intention of invading or occupying any of the countries currently waging war on them (they don't need to in order to achieve all of their strategic goals) I am also aware that they currently field the best hypersonic guided missile in the world. And the idea that they won't respond at all is wishful thinking of the worst sort.
The israeli controlled West's overarching strategic plan for decades has been to "kick the dog until he bites" and they have been using it against little shithole 3rd world nations for years. But that was while the West, and it's military were in the ascendency. That is no longer true. And now they are faced with near-peer opponents who have the moral high ground.

Then they’re still stuck on the first part. Plan for the worst is taking precautions to prepare oneself for the worst possible outcome. Hope for the best is hoping it doesn’t come true.
From the old adage of the grasshopper and the ants, it is having optimism of the grasshopper and the work ethic/resolve if the ants.

That's the point. They have no "precautions to prepare oneself for the worst possible outcome" that go beyond "hoping it doesn’t come true".
That is the problem. They are acting as if they can just keep poking the bear with a sharp stick and keep hoping it doesn't just walk out of it's pen through the unlocked gate and rip their heads off. And, even knowing that, they just keep right on poking him anyway. It's insane.

That's the point. They have **no** "precautions to prepare oneself for the worst possible outcome" that go *beyond* "hoping it doesn’t come true".
