Someone in the comments mentioned using cash instead of digital currency. That only works if there is cash.
Where I am the banks and money machines are disappearing from small towns/cites. The major centers still have them however less than before and they have become very cash/people unfriendly (with a smile though). Also there are very few tellers (2 normally) so wait times are long however a very helpful employee goes up and down the line to inform/assist people with any transaction that could be done on the machine in the lobby or regret to inform them that their transaction is not possible. I used to be able to swap cash for other denominations over the counter at any bank without an account. The last bank that I exchanged cash at just a few months ago now require an account and then I have to withdraw the cash in the limited denominations available at the machine, apparently for security reasons (not mine obviously). Many other things going on, all to make you give up your cash, make it very difficult to use and link you to each transaction. The worst thing is so many people seem to love the idea of a cashless society.
I've seen the exact same changes. The slow slide into a cashless society. One recent highlight in that slide involved a local restaurant that decided to go cash-free. The backlash was swift and huge. They backtracked within two weeks. I'm not sure business has completely recovered yet, and it's been months.
The backlash was swift and huge.
No doubt that triggered a 'focused conditioning required' response from TPTB.
