I find this difficult to believe, At least here in the USA. Stuff on the shelf is already paid for, most stores run on a tight budget as is. I don't see them throwing out anything. They might try to return them to the distributor for a refund or credit but not throw it out. Otherwise they will sell through the existing stock and just not order anymore.

Agreed. I think the media may have discovered one shop that did this. It's not reasonable to throw away inventory in protest.
