I don't pirate often, but every videogame I've pirated I've also bought a legitimate copy later. Normally I'll just straight out buy it, but if there's a single player game that's $20 or so, I might pirate it first if I know nothing about the game.

Oxygen Not Included is a great example. I pirated them when they were still selling their pre-release software, and later bought the game for full price. I didn't even bother waiting for a Steam Sale because I thought it was worth supporting them.

Timberborn had a limited free trial version before their full release that allowed you try out their game. Play as much as you want, but you only have one map, limited builds, and 50 cycles. Bought them the day after they officially released.

Rocket League, I purchased because a guy brought it into work during night shifts.

All three games above I got some kind of trial out of it. Compare that to Rainbow 6 Siege that took me years to buy, but now is one of my go-to games. I would have bought it sooner if I ever tried it out. Part of that is me though because they do have free weekends occasionally.
