I saw something like this happen before, but a different ride. Someone through an m80 firework into the open area while it was running. It went off and the operator hit the emergency stop. It worked for about 15 seconds, then the break line blew.
Because of the operators quick action, the people dropped about 10 ft max rather than from the 40 ft it would have been.
