There's a joke a heard awhile back about some old bastard that got his hearing fixed and pretended to still be deaf and he could hear what his ungrateful kids were saying. He kept changing his will.

lol my family wasn't rich, but my grandfather did this to a lesser degree. more just so he didn't have to answer nonsense or not be a part of conversations he didn't care for. was a veteran move for sure.

It can't be for the first time. If you are born deaf, your brain doesn't generate the necessary neural connections to process speech. Sign develops the ability to process language, just not the audible sounds. When you hear a foreign language, you know it is speech even if you don't understand. This man was probably rendered deaf and the cochliar implant restored his lost speech. Still quite emotional.
