TV always cost the viewer dearly.

TL;DR: We've saved about $18,000 since 2008 by cutting the cable and having just internet service.

I finally convinced my wife to cut the cable back in 2008. I did it by getting her to watch one (just ONE) episode of one of her programs which we accidentally failed to record on the DVR, on a 20" computer screen. At first she was miffed about going from watching on a 50" screen to the little 20" screen. I sat through the entire episode with her and said absolutely nothing.

At the end, I asked her: So how was that? And to my utter amazement, she lit up bright as a Christmas tree on speed and exclaimed "THAT WAS AWESOME! We watched a one-hour show in only 43 minutes and there were NO ADS! I want to do this from now on."

Since then, I have invested in one machine for downloading and rendering, another machine to act as the "entertainment server" and a whole SLEW of hard drives (which I have replaced twice over the years). (Oh, and I have replaced both the download and the entertainment machines once each.) And AND I've purchased a number of boxes to go with the two TVs we use.

So why all the detail here? Because I'm a number-cruncher. And I've figured out that since 2008, we have saved about $15,000 OVER what it would have cost to have cable - not including all the movies we've watched. So honestly, probably closer to $18,000. And that INCLUDES all the money I've spent on computers and hard drives and TV boxes.

We cut that cable in 2008, and we have never since had regular TV or cable and we have not suffered one bit. In fact, one day while we were at a hotel, my son turned on the TV and was astonished at what he saw. And he hated it. And he turned it off.

Cut your cable. Do it.
