Never considered using niggers as the counterweight for our trebuchets

You need quite a lot to make it effective but if you've got a bunch of them lying around it's a suitable solution.

I seethe counterweight breaking through the roof which isn't built for such compact loads. Then the beams go up and the skywalk goes down.

If they were properly tied to the ends of those beams they'd be way overkill considering the mechanical advantage. It wouldn't be difficult to add plates and spacers to make it more secure and reduce the amount of weight needed. But that'd require more work.
