Footage is from the latest (3rd) remake of 'All quiet on the Western Front.' In the age of diversity hires & White replacement in all forms of media, this film was actually refreshing to see since no blacks are w/ in. The overriding theme of the book 'All Quiet on the Western Front' which this film is based on is the terrible brutality of war. Whereas most war novels tend to romanticize what war was like, emphasizing ideas such as glory, honor, patriotic duty, & adventure, 'All Quiet on the Western Front' sets out to portray war as it was actually experienced, replacing the romantic picture of glory and heroism w/ a decidedly unromantic vision of fear, meaninglessness, & butchery. In many ways, World War I demanded this depiction more than any war before it—it completely altered mankind’s conception of military conflict w/ its catastrophic levels of carnage, violence, & its gruesome new technological advancements (e.g., machine guns, poison gas, trenches) that made killing easier & more impersonal than ever before.
