The amount and type of light is also a factor.

Wow! Now there's a study that isn't just money laundering.

Mine just started laying again, although their brand of feed hasn't changed. I credit unseasonably warm weather, along with the days getting slightly longer.

I've also been discussing chicken recipes in their presence...

my chickens are nothing but a bunch of freeloading grandstanders, who need to be reminded on a daily basis what their fate could be....

yes, animals know when you are plotting their demise.

The joke with the local farmers is that when your chickens stop laying you come in one morning with the egg basket and tell the birds it's either eggs or chicken soup today.

[–] 3 pts

..so they stop laying because of climate change?

[–] 2 pts

...and start laying as well.

Are these people just being misinformed?

I grew up in the countryside and we always kept chickens, it was common knowledge that if you want chickens to lay eggs you should let them out of their enclosure to wander around the yard and peck ground for tiny pebbles that will form the shell of the egg.

If you want to fatten them up for slaughter, keep them in the coop and feed them grains. They won't lay eggs during this period, but will become nice and beefy.

We never used store bought feed, but I would bet that if you took a closer look on bags of any of those commercial feeds it would say on it what it's for.

Cityfags moving to countryside thinking they have it all figured out and then making fools out of themselves with these videos instead of just having a chat with you neighbor who has been living like this for 50+ years, or maybe just reading a book before you jump into something new.

The green hair and makeup should have answered that question.

Mega thot..she looks like she should be in a porn vid

Interesting fact about the pebbles

[–] 2 pts

and thousands of people have .025 of a acre and have 3 birds in a coup, live 1/2 mile from city center. no yard to have them wander. but have been buying the same pellet feed for 10 years and all of a sudden the recipe changed and birds stopped laying.

Yessss, give in to your anger. Join the dark sssside.

[–] 4 pts

ya its all over my tiktok. many backyard chickens stopped laying and it was cheaper ingredients the manufacturer changed to. they changed companies and started getting eggs in the winter

[–] 3 pts

If the feed doesn't contain calcium, like from oyster shells. They the hens will have either a low yield to no eggs.

[–] 0 pt

Why did the feed change?

[–] 3 pts

She was probably using the cheapest bargain bin one.

[–] 1 pt

Or there's a massive conspiracy to cause starvation!

[–] 1 pt

theres different kind of blended feeds for chickens. not all contain oyster shells.

[–] 3 pts

A lot of chickens are going to start laying again soon because Spring is coming. That's nothing to do with the feed.

Why give feed to your yard birds? Your great grandparents never did. That was beauty of having yard birds. Free eggs and meat without input.

Mine have an acre+ to forage. Plus they get all of our table scraps (at least what the dogs won't eat). They are fat and happy.

Except for dead of winter (when there are no insects to be found), I don't provide any feed.

Lower cost. Less unknowns in their diet. And, as an added bonus, my house stays insect free without heavy pesticides.

[–] 2 pts

Big surprise, their diet sucked and changing the food corrected it.

[–] 2 pts

chickens do not need feed. they will eat your left overs. Just feed them everything. shit they will eat chicken.

[–] 2 pts

My chickens slowed down every winter. ISnt that why chicken farms use artifical lights on the chickesn to keep them laying? They lay dependant on lght cycles.

[–] 1 pt

The amount of protein content combined with light. Protein is the biggest factor though. If you have shit feed that is mostly corn, they won't produce as much, if at all. Light will slow them down in the winter, but it won't halt egg production like poor diet will.
